Disney Cruise Line's Chocolate Souffle

If you have been on a Disney cruise, and have dined at Palo, you would have heard of their infamous chocolate souffle. I've had it each time we ate at Palo, which has been on every cruise so far. Here are three pictures from three different cruises of the chocolate souffle.

Well now, they have released a short video on how to make the souffle!

Guy Fieri's "Chicken Guy!" To Open At Disney Springs This August

Add another restaurant to the list of the many, MANY restaurants at Disney Springs (at some point, isn't this way too many already?). Food Network star Guy Fiery is to open "Chicken Guy!" this August, and the emphasis is on chicken tenders and the sauces, with the food being served being under $8. I wonder how long that price will last?

Since Fieri is a huge fan of sauces, like his signature Donkey Sauce, there will be 22 sauces for dipping, slathering and smothering — take that, Chick-fil-A! Fieri's Donkey Sauce recipe (made with mayo, roasted garlic, mustard and lemon juice and Worcestershire sauce —or "Washashasahshashasha" as Fieri calls it) is actually really delicious, so hopefully the other sauces will be just as tasty.

Not only will the restaurant have almost two dozen sauces, but there will also be a designated "sauce slinger" who will wear a holster with the sauces and walk around the restaurant, presumably to squirt and sauce up any customers' orders.

I'm not averse to checking it out when we go there this December, so maybe I'll report back. So far, our only dining experience at a celebrity chef joint in Disney Springs was at Rick Bayless's Frontera Cucchina, and it was a winner.  I'm not a fan of chicken tenders, but I'll give this one a try.

Mobile Food Ordering Adds Dining Plan

I reviewed the MyDisney Experience park app's mobile food ordering service at WDW a couple of months ago after we tried it during our December 2017 trip. We loved it, and can't think of any reason anyone would not want to use it for ordering at many of the counter services at the parks and at a couple of places in Disney Springs. The only significant part that was missing from this ability is the use Disney Dining Plan with the mobile service.

Well now, with the recent update of the app this past week, it appears that they have included the ability to use the Dining Plan to order food via the mobile app. I fully expected this because they tend to roll out the app in stages as they figure out its capabilities, etc. So it is not surprising that the Dining Plan is now included. Not that we will use this feature since we seldom get the Dining Plan, but I know that this was a common question and feature request.

So folks, if you have a smart phone, there really is no reason to not download the app, and if you're planning on eating at one of the quick service places at a WDW theme park, you'll be out of your mind to not use the mobile food ordering feature.

Inside The Flavor Lab

I don't get to read much about the Disney's Flavor Lab at WDW. So it was quite informative to read this article on what it is and what it does.

Flavor Lab is a 7,500-square-foot complex tucked away in the backstage parts of Disney's Florida property, off limits to the countless tourists who will eat the dishes dreamed up within its walls. In this building, the company’s chefs and Imagineers have access to a one-stop workshop to build immersive dining experiences, create detailed mythologies that lend story to restaurant locations and menu items, try out new technologies, make sure ideas are practical on a Disney-size scale, and test everything down to the individual appetizer. The goal: Create restaurants where a meal is as much a part of a theme park vacation as a ride on the Haunted Mansion.

Hey, when will get a backstage tour of this place? :)

A Review Of Mobile Food Ordering

On this trip (which we are still on for at least another couple of days), we used the mobile food ordering service that is inside the My Disney Experience App. This feature allows you to preorder and pay for food at various counter services at the 4 theme parks, and one in DS. Supposedly, it will expand even more as they add more counter service.

The take home review of this feature is: IT IS FREAKING AWESOME!

Say you want to order food from Flame Tree BBQ. You tap on "Order Food" section in the App. It will then list all the quick service restaurants that are able to prepare your order. Under Animal Kingdom theme park, you'll find Flame Tree BBQ. Tap on that, and you will be shown the menu that are available for mobile app ordering (for Flame Tree, it is identical to the one you get standing in line at the counter. For Sunshine Season, there are items that are not listed in the current menu list for that establishment).

You then pick the item you want, ADD to your selection, and add as many as you want. Also note that you may have the ability to customize, as in the type of side dishes if the item comes with it. So you may want to keep the default fries, or maybe change it to a fruit cup.

You also may add drinks, desserts, side dishes, etc., anything that is on the listed menu.

Then, once you are done with your selection, you place your order. This is where it will be processed to be paid. Then you will be presented with a button that said "I"m here, process my order now", or something to that effect. It is only THEN will they start preparing your order. Once your order is ready, the app will refresh that page and will tell you that your order is ready to be picked up.

Picking up the order is simple. You either give the name of the person who ordered it, or the order number that is displayed on your app. At each counter service that accept mobile order, there is a location denoted by a sign on where you should go to pick it up.

Having used it MANY times on this trip, this is one of the most convenient feature that we have come across with. It saves time standing in line, or the aggravation of standing behind a group of people who seem to only start to figure out what they want when they get to the cashier. Many times, we often start the order even before we got to the place we want to eat. When we get there, I would indicate that they should start the order while we look for a place to sit. Often times, it takes less than 5 minutes before we get the notice that our order is ready.

From what I can see, there are still not many guests who are making use of this feature, so the efficiency of this service may change as more and more people use it. But as of now, I can't think of any sane reason for anyone not to use this. Unless of course, you enjoy standing in long lines that crawl.

Review of Paddlefish at Disney Springs

What was formerly Fulton Crab House, Paddlefish at Disney Springs seems to offer a larger range of menu beyond just seafood. Hey, what's wrong with seafood-centric menu?

I wonder if they still have those crabcakes that Fulton had? I must say that I was a fan of the old Fulton. It definitely needed an update, but we'll see if Paddlefish is any good. I hope they still have the 20% discount for DVC members for lunch! :)

My Disney Experience App Now Allows Food Ordering

I had notification of an update of My Disney Experience app this morning. Upon reading the details of the update, it includes the much-publicized capability order food at quick service restaurants.

I opened the app after the update, and sure enough, there is a section to order food. Tapping that causes a notification to pop up that only Satu'Li Canteen at the new Pandora land will be the first to accept mobile food ordering when it opens on May 27, 2017. The restaurant is the only one so far listed for mobile ordering.

As someone who uses the Panera and Starbucks apps for mobile ordering frequently, I welcome this convenience and can't wait for it to expand to the counter service restaurants at WDW that I frequent.

Skipper Canteen Opening This Week

... and we missed it by just a few days. Darn it!

The new Skipper Canteen restaurant at the Magic Kingdom is scheduled to open tomorrow, Dec. 16, 2015. And of course, we were at WDW till this past Sunday, so we are missing its opening by just a few days.

Oh well, what can you do?

WDW Picture of the Day

This is an older photo. This is Minnie at Liberty Tree Tavern, back when they had character meals for dinner. All the characters, Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Chip 'n Dale, and except for Pluto, were all wearing colonial garbs. It was a lot of fun!

MK To Get Jungle Cruise-Themed Restaurant

Just announced at the current D23 event, The Magic Kingdom will open later this year the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen restaurant.

Jungle Cruise skippers will staff the restaurant, so expect some eye-rolling puns on the menu.

Disney says the Canteen will have several dining rooms, such as crew mess hall and a meeting room of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

You'd be forgiven if that brought Pleasure Island's now-defunct Adventurers Club to mind.

Ah, so THAT'S where they'll bring back the Adventurers Club! Kungaloosh!!

Can't get into Beaches and Cream?

Now that Disney has made it difficult to go to Beaches and Cream without adding it to your advance project plan, there are some alternatives to consider.  DISNews has this post about other options which include using the walk-up window at B&C and heading over to the Boardwalk.
Walt Disney World veterans know that there may be no better place on property to grab a burger and ice cream than Beaches and Cream at the Yacht and Beach Club resort. They also know that because of this it is very difficult to get a table, and since Disney has recently started accepting Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) for Beaches and Cream, it has been much more difficult to walk up and get a table.
Just across Crescent Lake from the Yacht and Beach Club is the Boardwalk resort, with many options for dining that don’t fill up as frequently as Beaches and Cream .

Spice Road Table at World Showcase - A Review

One of the highlights of the few short days that we spent at WDW was our first meal at the newly-opened Spice Road Table at the Morocco pavilion. We have heard and read about it, so we kinda knew what to to expect. Since we love Moroccan food and were frequent diners at Marrakesh restaurant, this was definitely a place that we wanted to try. And we weren't disappointed.

We walked in for lunch, and the place wasn't busy at all. We got a terrific table by the window, and I can only imagine the view we might get to see during Illuminations.

The food, if you don't know, is Mediterranean-inspired, and they are served tapas style, i.e. in small portions/small plates. It is meant to be shared and also allows you to sample a larger variety. A quick look at the menu offers a tantalizing sampler of various things that we wanted to try.

Both of us went for the Tingis sampler, and added an order of the Greek salad, and the calamari. The Greek salad was refreshing, with a very nice dressing that didn't overpower the fresh ingredients.

Calamari was excellent, and accompanied by a couple of nice and contrasting dipping sauces.

The star of the show, though, was the sampler, which consisted of the Harissa chicken roll, lamb slider, and lamb sausage.

I started off with the Harissa chicken roll, and immediately was blown away by it. It has such a strong, unique flavor, and the pastry was warm and crispy, just the way it should be. If you've had the "lumpia" egg roll (why would you unless you are familiar with Filipino food?), this is of the same texture. I could devour several of these in the blink of an eye. It was that good. I then proceeded to the lamb slider. Again, delicious and tasty. It has a "beefy" flavor that most beef hamburgers are sadly lacking. Lastly, I went to the lab sausage, usually called merguez, which I've had before in various tagine dishes. Nothing wrong here and it had the bite and flavor that it should.

Both of us polished these off in no time. By then, we were ready to order another plate, which is a common practice when you are having tapas, and they also left a menu at our table for doing just that. We order the grilled skewered beef and chicken.

We both started attacking it with gusto before I remembered that I needed to snap a photo. So what you see here is the half-eaten skewers. Again, no complaints here, but I think I prefer the items in the sampler plate.

This was a singular, best-tasting food that I could remember anywhere in World Showcase. The food was delicious and unique. The uniqueness is a strong quality, because I tend to want to find things that I can't get anywhere else. They didn't just stick to moroccan food, but sampled a larger region of the Mediterranean. In the process, they have a menu full of tasty interpretation of the region.

I highly recommend this restaurant, especially if you are willing to try new things. And my advice is to go soon! It is a sad fact that menu items and food quality changes at restaurants in WDW, most not for the better. Things get watered down, or "dumbed down" for the tourist palette, so unique and unusual items tend to get discarded. I am skeptical that this restaurant can maintain the strong and bold flavors for a long time, so go now before the muck it up!

The only drawback of this place is that, while they have iced mint tea, they do not have the regular hot moroccan mint tea, which they always have in Marrakesh restaurant. I like the hot mint tea even when it is hot outside. It really cools you down. But the iced mint tea that we had weren't bad either.

Final verdict: Highly Recommended.

Starbucks at WDW Hollywood Studios

A 5th Starbucks at WDW will be opening at DHS in 2015.  So there will be a Starbucks at EPCOT, MK, DHS and 2 Downtown (Disney Springs).  The obvious question is: any plans for Animal Kingdom?

From DIS News...
A new Starbucks location will open inside the park in February of 2015.  The Trolley Car Cafe will be located along Hollywood Boulevard and be themed like a trolley car station.  Disney baked goods and Starbucks La Boulange pastry items will be available.  An exact location hasn't been announced.

Starbucks Reserve on West Side

Laughinplace.com posted this article about the new Starbucks store at WDW Downtown Disney's West Side.  The store is designated as "Reserve" and will carry a more extensive selection of coffee including some more "exotic" varieties.  The store is large and features some high tech devices, along with a pretty nice area to sit and enjoy the view.

Disneyland restaurant awards

Dis News reports that food critics in Southern California have given various awards to several DLR restaurants, in the parks and hotels. Some of the restaurants on the list include Steakhouse 55, Napa Rose and Blue Bayou.  Even Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel was given 3 stars.  Many people feel that DLR has better food than WDW and these awards help support that opinion.

Corn Dogs

Today happens to be National Corn Dog Day. In keeping with the spirit of the day, Disney Parks Blog has posted this article about where you can actually get a corn dog at WDW and DLR.
We still remember our first bite of a corn dog at the Little Red Wagon at the top of Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland park, slathered with mustard. It’s still the top spot, but you also can find corn dogs at Stage Door Café in front of Frontierland, and at Corn Dog Castle at Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure park.
The list includes some places at WDW, but there seems to be at least one omission.  Boardwalk Joe's, a food cart on the Boardwalk, has good corn dogs.  At least they used to.  This calls for a visit to Joe's to make sure the dogs are still on the menu.

Changes at Cosmic Ray's

WDW Magic.com reports in this article that the outdoor patio at Cosmic Ray's is now enclosed and air conditioned.
The old patio area at Cosmic Ray's is now fully integrated into the main restaurant dining room, which provides a lot of additional indoor air-conditioned seating capacity.
Other changes happening at the Starlight Cafe include new menu items, a digital menu board and a refurbishment of Sonny Eclipse. The popular space alien performs all day at Ray's, and often says he didn't know the true meaning of happiness until he got married - then it was too late.

Beaches and Cream will take reservations

DIS News reports that Beaches and Cream restaurant will begin taking reservations starting December 18. This news may be met with mixed reactions depending on how you like to experience WDW.  As a small soda-fountain type restaurant, B & C is a fun place to eat and the food is good.  It was often a spur of the moment decision to eat there but, with this new policy, that might become difficult.
