Disney Cuts WDW Monorail Operating Hours

Starting Aug 1st, Disney will reduce the operating hours of the WDW monorail, from 1 1/2 hours after park closes to only 1 hour after. So if you need transportation beyond 1 hour after MK or Epcot closes, you will have to use either buses, or a ferry/boat.

Disney plans to start shutting down monorail service one hour after regularly scheduled park closings.

The monorail had previously run for about one and a half hours after closing and during any extended late night hours.

The changes are expected to go into effect August 1 and only affect the Magic Kingdom and Epcot.
I love riding the monorail, even nowadays when they no longer allow guests to sit up front. However, I wish they move faster. The fact that one can often hear the spiel at the Transportation and Ticket Center that it takes almost the same amount of time to get to and from MK using either the monoral or ferry is NOT a positive image for a monorail, considering that the express monorail should make no stop between the two stations AND the ferry moves slower on average. So if it takes roughly the same amount of time, then the monorail most either be moving very slow, or is rather inefficient, or both.

The monorails can travel as fast as 40 MPH and even faster on the downhill section after the Contemporary Resort on the Express side. The monorails hold about 360 people fully loaded while the ferry holds twice that amount. The EPCOT and Express monorails are shutting down 1 hour after park closings and the Resort side will usually shut down 2 hours after the park closes. The exception to this rule will be on the 28th of July when the Express and Resort lines will be shutting down early for beam maintenance. Guests will need to use the Ferry and buses to get back to the TTC/parking lot from the Magic Kingdom on that day.
I know this because I work there. ;)

Yes, but how do you explain that, with all that speed, you often hear that it takes "roughly" the same amount of time to get to MK from TTC using the ferry as it is using the monorail. Is it because that riding the express monorail often involves it stopping somewhere to allow for traffic ahead of it to clear, and that it doesn't travel 40 MPH all the way through?

It doesn't bode well for the monorail when even cast members (especially the one working the tram) mention this fact as you're approaching TTC.
