Heat Loss in Dumbo: A Theoretical Approach

This research paper was published in 2001, but if there is anything deserving of an Ig Nobel prize, this certainly is a strong candidate for that year! :)

P.K. Phillips and J.E. Heath "Heat loss in Dumbo: a theoretical approach", Journal of Thermal Biology v.26, p.117 (2001).

Abstract: A flat plate model was used to calculate heat loss from the pinnae of the animated elephant Dumbo. In conditions of high wind velocity and large gradients, Dumbo could potentially dissipate more heat than he produces. This suggests that he may need the large ears to help lose the excess heat produced while flying.

That's hysterical!!

Zz.
